The Department of International Studies and History, CHRIST (Deemed to be University), organised a Guest Lecture by Dr. Charlotte Yates from University of Guelph, on the topic “Free Trade in an Age of My Country First: Canada in the Global Economy”.

The talk essentially focused on the Canadian trade relations wherein the Canada-Mexico-U.S. Trade Agreement became the core of discussion. Dr. Yates began her lecture by throwing light on the trade relationship between Canada and U.S via tracing the historicity of Canada’s international trade itself. She highlighted the key features and impact of free trade with Canada’s intense dependency on the U.S. for exports and imports as well. She also discussed the evolving economic relationship between India and Canada and its growing significance. She brought in the political angle thereafter, to trace how the relationship with the U.S. has been dwindling with negative effects of the Free Trade Agreement on the Canadian economy. By dwelling upon how trade has become more polarised and politicised in today’s day and age, she talked about the response of the Canadian people as well.

The lecture was followed by a constructive Q&A session wherein the students and faculties clarified doubts regarding the impacts of Brexit and Chinese market and the potentiality of Canada to become a super power.
The Coordinator of the department, Dr. Madhumati Deshpande gave a token of appreciation to Dr. Yates which was followed by a vote of thanks.
